Dust and ashes: Aiken-area churches observe Ash Wednesday

AIKEN — This week marks the start of Lent, and Feb. 18 meant Ash Wednesday gatherings for thousands of Aiken-area residents, with such concepts as self-denial and prayer coming into sharper focus, in the weeks-long preparation for Easter.
